Om Diodors Liv ved vi næsten ikke andet end hvad han selv har berettet i sin Fortale; han hørte ikke til sin Tids betydelige Forfattere, og den antike Litteraturhistorie tier derfor næsten ganske om ham. Han var født i Byen Agyrhion på Sicilien; opholdt sig imellem 60 og 57 f. Chr. i Ægypten; omtaler i sit Værk ikke noget Tidspunkt senere end 21 f. Chr.. Han har altså levet under Cæsar og August. Han påstår selv, at han har foretaget vidtløftige Rejser for at forberede sig til sit Værk, og at han har arbejdet derpå i 30 År.
